William Young was born in Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire. A Bricklayer by occupation, he attested for the 54th Regiment at Aldershot on 29 January 1868, aged 17 years. With the regiment (becoming the 2nd Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment in 1881) he served abroad in the East Indies, October 1871-January 1886 and Aden, January-December 1886. Awarded the L.S. & G.C., his pnly medal, in 1888. With copied service papers.
