Herbert Caddy was born in Weymouth, Dorset. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Dorsetshire Regiment at Dorchester on 10 March 1900, aged 18 years, 7 months. With the 2nd Battalion he served in South Africa, August 1901-April 1902; then with the 1st Battalion, he served in India, April 1902-November 1907, being transferred to the Corps of Hussars in January 1907 and to the South Staffordshire Regiment in July 1907. He served in South Africa once more during November 1907-February 1911 and then Gibraltar during February-October 1911. Returning home, he was discharged having completed his first period of service on 10 October 1911. With copied service papers.
