Hammer Price:
£320

18th Century Tokens, AYRSHIRE, Ayr, William Fullarton, Pattern Shilling, 1799, by J. Milton, in silver, similar, edge plain, 5.32g/12h (Dykes, BNJ 2002, p.154, fig. 5; DH 5 bis II). No die rust, virtually as struck and attractively toned, rare, almost certainly an original striking £300-400

Provenance: SNC February 2003 (SC 216).

Sold with a copy of the metal composition analysis of this and other coins sampled by the Royal Mint in February 2006. Two other original strikings in silver have recently appeared on the market (Spink Auction 202, 25 March 2010, lot 192, 4.95g; DNW Auction T13, 2 October 2013, lot 469, 5.15g), which suggest that the specimen in the BM (Banks collection, E 2834, 4.42g) is at the lower end of the weight range for such pieces (Dykes,
BNJ 2002, pp.154, 158)
