A 1940 Dunkirk operations D.S.M. group of six awarded to Chief Petty Officer L. W. Dagley, Royal Navy

Distinguished Service Medal, G.VI.R. (JX.127574 A/P.O. H.M.S. Venomous); 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Burma Star; War Medal, with M.I.D. oak leaf; Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.VI.R., 1st issue (JX.127574 P.O. H.M.S. Defiance) together with original M.I.D. Certificate (Chief P.O., D.S.M., H.M.S. Squirrel, 22 January 1946), Certificates of Service, parchment Hurt Certificate (21 December 1929), and various Gunnery, Torpedo, and Aircraft Handling History Sheets, generally very fine (6) £800-900

D.S.M. London Gazette 27 August 1940: ‘For good services in operations off the Dutch, Belgian and French Coasts.’

The recommendation states: “Quickley rectified an electrical failure at “A” gun, and after No.3 of “B” gun’s crew had been wounded by shrapnel, he efficiently performed the duties of that number, although he is a torpedoman, showing great devotion to duty.” H.M.S.
Venomous took part from 20 May to 4 June in supporting actions and the evacuation of Allied troops from the ports of Boulogne, Calais and Dunkirk. On 21 May 1940 she was dive-bombed by Stukas at the Calais Maritime Station during embarkation of British sailors and civilians.

London Gazette 22 January 1946: ‘For outstanding leadership, coolness and devotion to duty whilst serving in H.M. Ships Squirrel and Vestal in mine-sweeping operations in the Far East in July 1945.’
