John Curteis was born on 21 April 1864 and joined the King’s Royal Rifle Corps in May 1886. He became Captain in June 1894 and was employed with the Army Pay Department from February 1895. He served in South Africa in the Relief of Ladysmith, and in operations in the Orange River Colony and the Transvaal, and retired in the rank of Major and Staff Paymaster.
