Noel FitzEdward Greville Sampson-Way was born at Walmer, Kent, on 21 August 1872. He joined the Royal Marines in September 1892, as 2nd Lieutenant, and was promoted to Lieutenant in July 1893, and to Captain in February 1900. He served in 1900 north of the Yang-tse from 4th November to the end of the operations in China (Medal). He was appointed to the Reserve of Officers, R.M., on retirement in September 1904. During the Great War he was one of a number of Royal Marine officers who rendered valuable services whilst borne for Wireless duties on the staffs of many of the Admirals. Sampson-Way himself was Assistant Wireless Transmission Censor at Clifden from August 1914 to 1917, and at Poldhu and Rame Head, from 1917 to June 1919. He was brought to the notice of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty for valuable services during the War and received the British War Medal for these services. Sold with copy service record.
