John Shea was born in Waterford, Ireland, in July 1854, and enlisted at Westminster in July 1875. He served in 11 Battery 7th Brigade in South Africa and was one of 38 all ranks to receive this clasp. Whilst in South Africa he was often sick, suffering from ague, dysentry and hepatitis. He returned to England in January 1881, spent a further period in hospital and was discharged Medically Unfit the following March.
