Brook Bailey was born on 13 January 1811, and was a Cadet at Addiscombe, 1825-27. He arrived in India in February 1828, and served with various companies of the Bombay Artillery in that Presidency. In 1839 he was sent to Aden where, in the following year, he served with the 4th Company 2nd Battalion and was engaged in repelling an attack by Arabs on Aden. In 1843-44 he served with the 6th Company of Golandaz at Baroda, and from October 1844 to August 1846 with the 4th Company 1st Battalion in Sindh. He was afterwards appointed to the 4th Company 2nd Battalion which, forming part of the Bombay division of the Army of the Punjab, he commanded at the second siege of Mooltan in 1848-49. In the course of that siege, on 27th December 1848, he was very severely wounded, his left arm having been carried away by a cannon-shot, and he died in consequence on the 8th January 1849. He was mentioned in despatches London Gazette 7 March 1849. His grave is in the cemetery near New Jail, Mooltan, and his name is commemorated on the tablet in St Mary’s Church at Mooltan to those who were killed or died of their wounds during the siege of that place.
