M.M. London Gazette 18 October 1940: ‘For gallant and distinguished services in the field.’ The original recommendation for this award has not survived.

On 12 June 1940, more than a week after the last British troops had been evacuated from Dunkirk, the 51st (Highland) Division was forced to surrender to General Erwin Rommel’s 7th Panzer Division at St Valéry-en-Caux. More than 10,000 members of the Division were driven into five years captivity in prison camps.
