M.M. London Gazette 29 November 1940. The recommendation states: ‘Somaliland. For conspicuous gallantry at Barkasan on 17th August 1940. When as a Section Commander, he remained at his post when orders to withdraw failed to reach him and although completely surrounded by superior enemy forces he fought his section against overwhelming odds until he ran short of ammunition. He then skilfully withdrew his Section although fired on from both flanks and made his way with remnants of his Section to Berbera, some 40 miles distant, without food or water. His courage and determination throughout the day was a great example to his men.’
