A scarce Ashantee War D.C.M. group of four awarded to Sergeant Instructor of Musketry William Street, 42nd Royal Highlanders

Distinguished Conduct Medal, V.R. (Serjt. William Street, 42nd Regt.) naming engraved in the correct style for this campaign; Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (42nd Highlanders); Ashantee 1873-74, 1 clasp, Coomassie (269 Serjt. I. of M., 42nd Highds. 1873-4); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (269 Sergt. I. of M., 42nd Foot) suspension claw tightened on the second, edge bruising and contact wear, otherwise nearly very fine or better (4) £3500-4500

D.C.M. awarded for the battle of Amoaful on 31 January 1874, where he was wounded; ‘The cheerful disregard of personal danger of Sergeant-Instructor of Musketry Street, though badly wounded in the thigh.’ His Distinguished Conduct Medal was presented by the Queen at Windsor Castle on 16 May 1874, and he received his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1876.

William Street was born in the Parish of Aston-Remenham, near Henley on Thames, Berkshire, and attested for the 42nd Regiment at Westminter in January 1858, aged 18. Sold with copy discharge papers which confirm all four medals.
