USA, South Carolina Interstate and West Indian Exposition, 1901-2, a silver medal by Gorham Co, Carolina enthroned holding mace and ship, between palmettos, the ruins of Fort Sumter and Charleston city street, rev. palmetto and palm wreath, named (Awarded to Angel Ramirez), 64mm. Light scratch above Carolina’s head, otherwise extremely fine and rare £300-500

In order to attract new business to the area, the city of Charleston hosted the South Carolina Inter-State and West Indian Exposition in 1901-2. It was not a commercial success and medal winners were obliged to purchase their own medals – in the case of silver medals these were either silver-plated bronze ($3.50) or sterling silver ($6.50)
