William Bowles, FRGS (1780-1869), entered the Navy 9 September 1796; served in the Napoleonic War, Halifax (Nova Scotia), the Baltic and South America, 1796-1820; appointed extra Naval ADC to William IV, 5 September 1831; CB 18 April 1839; MP for Launceston 1844-52; Vice-Admiral of the Blue 8 March 1852; Admiral of the Blue 28 November 1857; C-in-C Portsmouth 1859.
