Two officers and 36 other ranks of the 2nd Life Guards, were present at Abu Klea in the Heavy Camel Regiment. The 2nd Life Guards were commanded by Lord Dundonald, who first rode across the desert to deliver the dispatch confirming the death of General Gordon at Khartoum.

Charles Pattman was born in the parish of Southwould, Suffolk, sometime in 1861. He enlisted into the 2nd Life Guards on 9 July 1880, being discharged at Windsor Cavalry Barracks on 11 June 1891, having attained the rank of Corporal of Horse. Sold with confirmation and eight pages of copied service papers.
