D.C.M. London Gazette 27 September 1901. Brought to notice in a despatch from Earl Roberts, K.G., G.C.B., for having rendered special and meritorious service, 29 November 1900, despatch dated 4 September 1901.

William Matthew Wixon was born at Queenstown, Cork, and enlisted for the 16th Lancers at Dundalk on 13 February 1885, aged 19 years 4 months. His surname is spelt both ‘Wixon’ and ‘Wixen’ throughout his service papers and, indeed, he himself signs his name both ways, but appears finally to settle on ‘Wixon’. He was promoted to Sergeant in June 1890, and to Squadron Sergeant-Major in January 1895. He served in South Africa from January 1900 to May 1903, and again from September 1903 until November 1904. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal with £5 Gratuity in May 1904, and was attached to the Permanent Staff of the Essex Yeomanry from November 1905 until his final discharge in April 1912.
