Aubrey Brooke Winch was born on 3 September 1883, and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, on 8 May 1901. He served in South Africa from January 1902 (Queen’s Medal with four clasps). In April 1902 he transferred to the Royal Scots Greys, and was attached to the Egyptian Army from November 1909 until March 1913, with the rank of Bimbashi. During this period he took part in the operations against the Beir and Anuak Tribes in South-Eastern Sudan in 1912 (Sudan Medal with clasp). He was mentioned in despatches during the Great War (London Gazette 13 July 1916) and awarded the O.B.E., retiring in the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
