Le Frappeur Grec, c.1900, an octagonal light bronze plaque by O. Yencesse, Greek moneyer striking a coin by hand, reverse Syracusan decadrachm, L.JANVIER, L. BERCHOT, RÉDUCTION, etc. below in 5 lines, 60 x 53mm (PBE –; BDM VIII, 304; cf. Baudey/Bricher 1992, 51 and BDW 18, 420, for obverse). Very fine, rare, especially so with the Janvier-Berchot legend (£40-60)

Messrs Janvier and Berchot, at 22 rue de Montmorency, Paris, had a reputation as the two best technicians for the reducing and striking of medals in Paris at the turn of the century
