Julius Popper (1857-93), the Romanian-Jewish adventurer born in Bucharest, arrived in Tierra del Fuego in 1884 to prospect for gold in the north of the island. His small issue of coins in 1889 are deemed to be the first gold trade coins issued by a Jew
