Pair: Serjeant E. L. Churchill, 8th Battalion Canadian Infantry, wounded in France, latterly a member of the ‘Syren Force’ in North Russia

Ernest Leroy Churchill was born in Cornell, Ontario on 7 January 1894. A School Teacher by occupation, living in Lamont, Alberta, he enlisted into the 151st Battalion at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, on 11 January 1916, having previously served in the 22nd Oxford Rifles.

He proceeded to England, then France in December 1916 where he was taken onto the strength of the 8th Battalion. On 18 May 1917 he was wounded in action, receiving a gunshot wound, and was invalided to England. In September 1918 he was posted to the Syren Party for service in North Russia.

Returning to Canada in February 1919, he was discharged in July 1919. Later commissioned a Lieutenant in the Militia.
