John Campbell was born in Govan, Glasgow. A Carter by occupation, he attested for the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders at Glasgow on 6 April 1895, aged 22 years, 6 months. With them he served in India, December 1896-April 1902 and in South Africa, April 1902-April 1903. Transferred to the Army Reserve on 7 April 1903 and discharged on 5 April 1907. Served in the Scottish Rifles during the Great War.
