Herbert Mitchell was born in Swaffham, Norfolk. He served with the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers (24th Foot) in South Africa and Burma. After being discharged from the regiment he re-attested for the Corps of Royal Reserve Regiment at Norwich on 9 March 1900, aged 41 years, 3 months. He was discharged as time expired on 18 March 1901.
