Provenance: Bought Baldwin 1967.

Joseph Smith was a native of Wooford, Frome, Somerset, and enlisted at Cardiff on 29 June 1853, for 10 years. He embarked for India on 10 September 1853, in the Vernon, and arrived there on 31 December. Posted to the 3rd Bombay European Regiment, he transferred to the Bombay Artillery and served with the 2nd Company Reserve Artillery during the Indian Mutiny. The Medal Roll shows that he was present at Jhansi, Calpi and Gwalior.. He did not elect to join the Royal Artillery and was discharged with a good character on 26 January 1860.
