Estimate: £1,800–£2,200

The Queen’s Sudan Medal awarded to Sergeant J. Malone, Lincolnshire Regiment, who was killed in action at the battle of the Atbara on 8 April 1898 - the regiment’s only fatality on that date
Queen’s Sudan 1896-98 (3133 Sgt. J. Malone, 1/Linc. R.), extremely fine
£1800-2200

A glimpse of Sergeant Malone’s fate is to be found in the regimental history, which states that when the Battalion topped the hill in front of the Dervish positions ‘they came in for a tremendous fusilade, apparently from the left, as the bullets seemed to spurt up the ground ... the casualties amounted to one Sergeant killed [Malone], and three officers and fourteen men wounded. All of these, except the Sergeant killed and one man wounded, occurred inside the zareba. Two out of three officers wounded, and eleven casualties in other ranks, including the Sergeant killed, belonged to the two leading Companies of the Battalion.’
