Crimea 1854-56, 3 clasps, Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol (Pte. S. Magson, 55th Foot) contemporary engraved naming, edge bruising, contact marks, good fine £250-300

Saul Magson was born in Warley, West Yorkshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 53rd Regiment at Halifax on 25 September 1845, aged 18 years. Actually having enlisted into the 51st Light Infantry on that date, he was transferred to the 53rd Regiment in December 1845 and thence to the 55th Regiment in January 1846. With them he served 3 years 2 months in Gibraltar and one year 5 months in Turkey. Serving in the Crimea, he was severely wounded in the assault on the Quarries, 7 June 1855, by a musket ball to his lower abdomen and right hip (in the published casualty roll he is listed as ‘Masson’). Having made an amazingly swift recovery, he was again severely wounded during the final attack on the Redan, 8 September 1855, being hit by a musket ball on his left hand which resulted in the amputation of his middle finger. As a result of his injuries he was discharged as medically unfit for further service on 26 November 1855. With copied discharge papers and roll extracts.
