John Gordon Campbell was born in Glasgow on 24 February 1830. His Grand Uncle was Lieutenant-General Sir Colin Campbell. He purchased an Ensigncy in the Black Watch for £450 on 17 November 1848. He became a Lieutenant by purchase on 12 December 1853 and Captain by purchase on 9 May 1855. He retired by the sale of his commission on 9 May 1856 and died at Peebles on 30 November 1865. With copied letters re. his commission and copied roll extracts.
