At the outbreak of war the 9th Lancers were based at Tidworth. They entered France on 16 August 1914 as part of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division.

Private Frank A. Nightingale, 9th Lancers, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 15 August 1914. As such, he may well have taken part in the famous actions at ndregnies and Doubon where Captain Grenfell, 9th Lancers, won the Victoria Cross (24 August 1914). He may also have been serving at the front when the 9th Lancers made their spirited charge against the German Lancers (actually 1st Guard Dragoons) on 7 September 1914. Nightingale was discharged on 1 September 1915 but appears to have re-enlisted and served in the Yorkshire Regiment, Durham Light Infantry and the Green Howards - with whom he later earned the Army L.S.&.G.C.
