At the outbreak of war the 5th Lancers were stationed at Dublin. They entered France on 16 August 1914 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division.

Lance-Corporal Frederick E. Saunders, 5th Lancers, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 15 August 1914. Postwar he transferred to the Bays.
