At the outbreak of war the 18th Hussars were stationed at Tidworth. They entered France on 17 August 1914 as part of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division.

Benjamin Brogden was born in Leeds on 20 November 1886. He joined the 18th Hussars c.1906 and served in France/Flanders from 15 August 1914. He was awarded a M.I.D. (
London Gazette 22 June 1915), the citation for which survives in the regimental history:

‘For gallantry near Ploegsteert Wood on October 20th, 1914, in helping back a wounded man under heavy fire.’

He was also awarded the Military Medal (
London Gazette 11 October 1916). Postwar the 18th Hussars were sent to India and it is probably at this time that Brogden transferred to the 4th Hussars. Brogden died in Leeds in 1947.
