Dantzell, bust of Claude Martin right, reverse legend around wreath, named (Besson, Sculpture, 2e Prix, 1851), 50mm (cf. Pudd. 836.4 obv., 836.3 rev.; BDM VII, 204). Polished, about very fine, rare (£30-40)

Claude Martin (1735-1800), born in Lyon, joined the French army and arrived in Pondicherry in 1752; after switching sides and aligning himself with the English East India Company he was, from 1776 until his death, the central European figure in Lucknow
