D.C.M. London Gazette 28 March 1918 ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When performing the duties of mounted orderly at the battery his way to the wagon line lay through a village in which he was sniped at, and on passing through which he saw his horse holder shot down and the horses break away. Though under heavy machine gun and rifle fire he went on until he came upon some infantry, with whom he took part in repelling the advancing enemy. Despite the fact that parties of the enemy were on all sides of him he succeeded in forcing his way through to the wagon line and delivered his message. His dogged determination and pluck were most praiseworthy.’
