John William Grayston was educated at United College, Bradford, and Edinburgh University, 1911-14, M.A. 1914. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in September 1914 and served with the 147th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, in France from February 1915 to June 1919. He was promoted Acting Major in April 1918 and relinquished his commission on completion of service in 1920.
