Alfred Walter Duncombe served during the Great War with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, being discharged due to the effects of wounds on 1 January 1917. He was killed in action during the Second War at the age of 43, whilst serving with the Merchant Navy. When the Dutch Transport Slamat was attacked and sunk by German aircraft on 27 April 1941, whilst in the process of evacuating British troops from the Island of Crete. A total of 193 men were lost from the Slamat, a figure that was to escalate when the Diamond and Wryneck who were engaged in rescuing her survivors, were both also bombed and sunk later in the day.
