Gilbert Harold Guest was born in England but emigrated to Australia and joined the Royal Australian Navy on 29 November 1913. He was serving in H.M.A.S. Protector at the outbreak of war, in which ship he was actively engaged in the raiding of German installations and searching for German shipping in New Guinea and the surrounding South West Pacific. He was later posted to H.M.A.S. Fantome, an armed sloop that was engaged against pirates and German interests in the Malay area from December 1916 to October 1917. He also saw service in H.M.A. Ships Cerberus, Penguin and Melbourne before his discharge on 28 November 1920. During the Second World War he was commissioned into the Royal Australian Engineers, reaching the rank of Captain before he was discharged in late 1944 due to ill health.
