Desmond Lambert Hartley was born at Beechpart, Consilla, on 29 March 1862, 2nd son of Colonel Richard Wilson Hartley. He joined the army as a Lieutenant in the Yorkshire Regiment in May 1884, becoming Captain in October 1884, and served in the Boer War with the 4th Mounted Infantry, and on special service, including operations in the Transvaal March 1901 to May 1902. He was Major and Lieutenant-Colonel in the 5th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, from July 1904 until July 1910. He was recalled for duty in the Great War and commanded the 7th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles, in France and Belgium from 19 December 1915 until 28 January 1916. He was subsequently Section Commandant, No. 2 and No. 4 Lines of Communication, from March 1916 until protection was withdrawn from the railways, and Commandant 10th Royal Defence Corps from October 1917 until June 1918.
