Three: Shipwright J. H. Avery, Royal Navy

James Avery (Senior) was born at Newtown, Wolverhampton, and entered the Royal Navy in March 1854, as a Boy 2nd class aboard H.M.S. Nile, in which ship he was present in the operations in the Baltic Sea.

James Henry Avery was born on 9 February 1866, at Plymouth, Devon, and entered the Royal Navy as Carpenter’s Crew in December 1877. He became a Shipwright in December 1890 and served in
Blanche from the end of that month until April 1894. During that period he was present with the small expedition under Lieutenant P. Vaughan Lewis, R.N., comprising forty naval volunteers from Blanche and Count Lovatelli, against the Somalis of Jubaland. A total of 41 clasps were issued, of which only 20 were single clasp medals.
