William Richmond was born in December 1823 at Kelvedon, near Witham, Essex, and enlisted into the Royal Marines on 30 July 1846. He served aboard H.M.S. Cleopatra from May 1849 to September 1853, and in December of that year joined H.M.S. Cressy for service in the Baltic. He was discharged in the rank of Corporal in April 1868, with a total service of 21 years 249 days, of which more than 17 years were at sea.
