D.C.M. London Gazette 26 January 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When a shell had blown the Lewis gun out of his hands, severely wounding him, he took the injured gun back to a place where it could not fall into the hands of the enemy, afterwards returning to his company with a rifle and continuing to fight throughout the day. He set a very fine example of pluck and determination.’
