Frank Smith was born and lived at Walsall, Staffordshire. He was killed in action in France and Flanders on 8 March 1918. The Regimental Chronicle for 1918 states: ‘the battalion was billeted in the tunnels by the Hooge Crater when the enemy attacked. The C.O. ordered Sergeant Smith and six Riflemen to clear the trenches of the enemy, Sergeant Smith was unfortunately killed in this action.’ He is buried in the Hooge Crater Cemetery, Zillebeke.
