John Cameron enlisted into the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 7 September 1915, having previously seen service with the Gordon Highlanders and the Rhodesian Regiment. He went with the 3rd Battalion to France on 26 October 1915, being moved to Salonika on 18 November 1915. The award of the Military Medal was made to him when, whilst in charge of a Scouts Section, he led a very successful patrol against the enemy, inflicting several casualties, without suffering any himself. Whilst still serving in Salonika he became sick with malaria, and as a result was sent back to England on 16 October 1918. He died at Wharncliffe War Hospital, Sheffield on 9 August 1920, at the age of 35 years.

Cameron’s M.M. is one of just two awarded to the 3rd Battalion, K.R.R.C. for Salonika.
