D.C.M. London Gazette 21 January 1920: ‘On 27 August 1919 during the action at Koikori, he bandaged up an officer under heavy machine gun fire. He kept off the enemy, who were attempting to outflank our troops, while Corporal Lidington fetched a stretcher. He then, assisted by Corporal Lidington carried the officer to a place of safety, and then returned to the front. He showed great courage and coolness.’
