Frederick Newman was born in Hutton, Brentwood. A Chauffeur by occupation, he enlisted as a Motor Driver in the Royal Marine Artillery on 17 February 1915. He served with the R.M.A. Anti-Aircraft Brigade until January 1919, being demobilised from the R.M.A. in March 1919. His service papers record him being admitted to hospital at Malo on13-15 April 1917 and 11-13 September 1917. His home address following his discharge was given as ‘Back Lodge, Ramsden Hall, Billericay, Essex. With copied service papers.
