William Hamilton Sterling Alston was born on 20 September 1889. He was gazetted to the Rifle Brigade on 13 January 1913, and served in France with the 4th Battalion. He was serving as Battalion Machine-Gun Officer when he was wounded in action at Hooge Wood on 10 May 1915, during the 2nd battle of Ypres. He was A.D.C. to the Divisional Commander of 9 Division B.E.F. from 8 September to 22 October 1915, and afterwards held a variety of staff appointments. He was promoted Brevet-Major on 3 June 1919, and became a substantive Major in May 1930. He passed through the Staff College after the war and was a G.S.O.2 at the War Office in 1922, Assistant Military Attaché at Washington, 1925, and again at the War Office in 1930 until he retired in 1931. He died in London on 12 September 1950.
