Henry John McDonald Downie, Captain of the cargo liner S.S.
Imperial Monarch, was awarded the O.B.E. for his services when his ship was bombed and straffed by enemy aircraft off the east coast of Scotland on 29 January 1940 - the ship survived both the action and the war. For the same action, a Gunlayer was awarded the B.E.M. (Civil) and six members of the crew received commendations.

As Captain of the cargo vessel S.S.
