Sub Lieutenant Joshua Laurence Oates, R.N.V.R., 188th Trench Mortar Battery, R.N. Division, was killed in action on 13 November 1916, aged 22 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He was the son of the late Joshua and Phoebe Oates. Before the war he had been a Dental Student at Guy’s Hospital, London.
