Five: Stoker Petty Officer F. J. Carter, Royal Navy

Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, Somaliland 1902-04 (Sto., H.M.S. Perseus); 1914-15 Star (297946 S.P.O., R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (297946 S.P.O., R.N.); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 1st issue (297946 Sto. P.O., H.M.S. Venerable) mounted court style for display, contact marks, nearly very fine (5) £260-300

Frederick John Carter was born in Pagham, Sussex on 13 December 1880. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 29 July 1901. Advanced to Stoker in May 1902, he served on H.M.S. Perseus, December 1903-May 1906 and qualified for the A.G.S. with clasp for Somaliland 1902-04. Carter was promoted to Stoker 1st Class in July 1906, Leading Stoker in November 1911 and Stoker Petty Officer in March 1914. Served on the old battleship H.M.S. Venerable, August 1914-December 1916 and then on the light battlecruiser H.M.S. Furious, June 1917-June 1921 (?). Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in November 1916. Shore pensioned on 27 September 1923.
