Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 1 clasp, Defence of Ladysmith (185864 A-B.H.M.S. Powerful) large impressed naming; 1914-15 Star (185864 P.O. R.N.); British War and Victory Medals, M.I.D. oak leaf (185864 P.O. R.N.); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 1st issue (185864 Ldg. Sean., H.M.S. Royal Arthur) mounted for display; together with a silver hunter pocket watch, case inscribed, ‘Siege of Ladysmith 118 Days 1899-1900 A. Capron, Ord. Sea. Bugler, H.M.S. Powerful, with chain and Chinese coin fob, with hairline cracks to watch face, condition of internal workings unknown; medals generally very fine (6) £600-700

Frederick G. Capron was born in Acton, Middlesex on 14 April 1880. He enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 26 September 1895 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in June 1896. Served on H.M.S. Powerful, June 1897-June 1900, being promoted to Ordinary Seaman in April 1898 and Able Seaman in September 1899. Served with the Naval Brigade at the Defence of Ladysmith. Promoted to Leading Seaman in August 1906 and Petty Officer in August 1913. He served throughout the Great War - on Pembroke I, Actaeon and Wallington. For his wartime services he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 8 March 1918). Shore pensioned in May 1920 and joined the R.F.R. He died in Wallingford in 1960.
