Henry Hughes was born in Rathkeale, Co. Limerick. He attested for the 10th Regiment at Fermoy, Co. Cork on 7 May 1838, aged 14 years, 4 months. Initially ranked as a Boy, he was ranked as Drummer, May 1839-January 1842 and again from January 1845 until the end of his service in May 1863. He served 17 years in the East Indies, seeing active service in both the 1st and 2nd Sikh Wars. With copied service papers.
