44th (East Essex) Regiment 1857 Pattern Officer’s Forage Cap a fine quality and very scarce example, the blue cloth body complete with black oak leaf mohair band and the gilt numerals ‘44’ the top with standard purl and lace decoration, complete with leather sweat band quilted silk lining and narrow leather chin strap. Named inside to ‘W. H. Overton 1st Major 1866’. Stiffened with a wooden removable liner, good overall condition £300-500

Note: William Henry Overton Commissioned Ensign by purchase in the 5th Fusiliers 1858 transferred to the 44th Regiment June 1860, retired by sale of his commission in 1870.
