The Zulu War medal awarded to Private William Poplett, 3/60th Foot, the only member of the regiment to be wounded in both the Zulu War and the First Boer War

South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (1926. Pte. W. Poplett. 3/60th Foot.) extremely fine and very rare £1500-2000

Private William Poplett was dangerously wounded in the action at Gingindhlovo on 2 April 1879. The 3/60th remained in South Africa after the end of the Zulu War and took an active part in the first Boer War of 1880-81. At the action of Ingogo River (Schuin’s Hooghte) on 8 February 1881, the regiment had 2 officers and 57 men killed, and 3 officers and 60 men wounded, amongst whom was Private William Poplett, by a gun shot in the leg. One officer and four men subsequently died of their wounds. Poplett was the only member of the 3/60th Regiment to be wounded in both of these campaigns. Sold with copied London Gazette despatches listing casualties for both actions and other research.
