Thomas Hunt attested for the Army at Rochester, Kent on 8 November 1859, aged 14 years, 6 months. He was initially a Boy with the 75th Regiment, later variously a Drummer or Private. His military career was one long brush with authority, being many times imprisoned or confined. He was transferred to the 89th Regiment in February 1865; to the 4th Regiment in December 1866; and to the 42nd Regiment in January 1867. He re-engaged for the 75th Regiment in August 1870 and was transferred to the 1/13th Regiment in December 1874 and was appointed a Bugler in May 1875. Hunt attained the rank of Sergeant in April 1883. Served overseas in India, October 1860-June 1862; in the Mediterranean, April 1867-October 1868; China, October 1868-August 1871; South Africa, August 1871-September 1879. Discharged in August 1886 - the South Africa Medal was his only medallic award. With copied service papers.
